MUSCAT: Muscat Municipality has intensified its public awareness efforts with the launch of an informational campaign encouraging residents and visitors to comply with smoking regulations in enclosed public places.
Through an awareness poster carrying the message 'Clean Air... A Right for Everyone,' the municipality reminds the public that smoking in indoor public spaces affects not only smokers but everyone around them, particularly children, older adults, and people living with respiratory conditions.
The campaign urges members of the public to refrain from smoking inside enclosed public facilities, use designated smoking areas where available, and adhere to the instructional signs and regulations in place. The initiative aims to foster healthier public environments while reinforcing respect for shared community spaces.
Residents have welcomed the campaign, describing it as a timely reminder of the important role individuals play in safeguarding public health.
Rashid bin Said al Alawi, a frequent visitor to shopping malls in Muscat, said the initiative reflects growing public awareness of the dangers posed by second-hand smoke.
"Many families spend long hours in malls and other public facilities, so maintaining smoke-free indoor spaces is essential. Campaigns like this encourage people to respect public regulations and be mindful of the wellbeing of others," he said.
Mariam al Maskari, who regularly visits parks and public venues with her family, said the municipality's message is both relevant and necessary.
"Simple awareness messages can make a real difference. Everyone deserves to enjoy public places without being exposed to cigarette smoke, especially children and older people. Using designated smoking areas is a practical solution that benefits everyone," she said.
Health experts continue to warn that exposure to second-hand smoke significantly increases the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases among non-smokers.
They note that sustained public awareness campaigns remain among the most effective ways to encourage healthier behaviour and improve compliance with public health regulations.
Through initiatives such as this, Muscat Municipality continues to strengthen community awareness and promote a culture of shared responsibility, encouraging residents and visitors alike to help create cleaner, healthier, and safer public spaces across the governorate.
